#FollowFriday – Lisa Petrilli (@lisapetrilli)

I honestly don’t remember when I started following Lisa Petrilli on Twitter, but I can’t remember a time when she was not in my stream. When we met in person this past December at the inaugural #Cocktails4Causes event at the Drake Hotel, I teased her that I felt like a stalker because I follwed her on twitter, got the MENG newsletter which she was involved with, and then bumped into her again as the co-host of #LeadershipChat. Everywhere I wanted to be, she seemed to be there first. Ah, well.

Here’s a short list of reasons why you need to follow Lisa:

2011 Themes – Mentor | Inspire | Balance

Posted by on Jan 5, 2011 in Business & Leadership, Career & Networking | 4 comments

This being the first week of 2011, many friends and colleagues have been busy looking backward and forward – assessing their performance for 2010 and determining their focus areas for 2011.  One of the most interesting ways to look forward is to create broad themes for the oncoming year.  Online friend Margie Clayman (one of my favorite bloggers) has taken Chris Brogan’s idea of building themes around 3 words and created a hashtag.  The idea is to blog about your three words and then share them on twitter, using the hashtag #cb3words so we can all check out each other’s developmental themes for the year.

After thinking about this for the last couple days, I’ve decided that my three words for 2011 are Mentor, Inspire, and Balance.  Here’s what each means to me:

How Strong Is Your Network?

Here’s a question for you. Someone you know casually asks for your help to win an award for the book they’ve just written. How do you feel? What action, if any, do you take? Let’s bring that hypothetical situation into reality.

A few weeks back, I received the following message:

Lies, Childhood Vacations & Marketing Data

Posted by on Dec 15, 2010 in Marketing & Advertising | 1 comment

I grew up in the far western suburbs of Chicago; so far west that when I would meet people from somewhere other than Chicago I would describe my home town as “the last ditch of civilization between Chicago and Des Moines – west of me it’s nothing but cornfields.”

I suspect my family was similar to many middle class families of the 70’s and 80’s. We weren’t big on summer vacations. We didn’t own a vacation home or migrate to the same summer spot like a small gaggle of monarch butterflies. Still, there were occasions when we would take a long weekend or a week off and relax. My childhood vacation memories (with the lone exception of a trip to Disney World) were of driving north into Wisconsin.  We had two favorite vacation spots as a family. We’d take a short drive to Lake Geneva or take a longer drive way up north to Sturgeon Bay.

What is #UsGuys?

Posted by on Dec 13, 2010 in Social Media | 25 comments

If you know me through Twitter, or use Twitter in a serious, ongoing way it’s likely you’ve stumbled across a tweet or two with the #usguys hashtag in it. After seeing #usguys often enough, you’ve probably wondered “just what the heck is #usguys, anyway?”

A few short weeks ago I was asking that same question, as I watched more than a few dozen tweets fly by with the #usguys hashtag.  Intrigued, I dug deeper and ran a twitter search for the hashtag.  What I discovered amped up my Twitter experience and might have the same impact on you. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

First, a little background.

Expand Your Horizons

I’ve always been fascinated by this thought provoking phrase.  There are at least three frequently used variants.

Expand your horizons
Broaden your horizons
Widen your horizons

They really all mean about the same thing, don’t they?  As I sat and pondered the meaning of these phrases, I got to wondering how far away are our horizons, anyway?  I mean how far can we really see?  I mean, I know this phrase isn’t necessarily meant to be taken literally, but I just had to know.
