I hate Twitter auto DM messages. I realize hate may be a bit of a strong word. But I genuinely hate them. I hate them so much that I kicked off this blog nearly two months ago with a post all about how much I hate auto DMs.

By the way, I’m not the only one that hates them. Turns out you probably hate them too! You see, as I was drafting that post, I saw a blog post from Augie Ray, twitter pal extraordinaire and Social Media Analyst at Forrester. Turns out Augie conducted a survey, and most people hate Twitter auto DMs (by a 40 to 1 margin).

Augie and I agree that Twitter auto DMs suck. Individually, we’ve been crusading on behalf of all of you to stamp out the auto DM one Twitter user at a time. I’ve been following Augie’s lead. I respond to each auto DM with the following DM back:

Pls stop sending auto DMs. They’re unwelcome, decrease followers & increase spam reports. Survey: http://bit.ly/StopAutoDMs

But fighting a battle like this is quite a challenge. And it’s frustrating. By my best calculation, it should take us roughly 1000 years to completely eliminate auto DMs by enlightening tweeps one at a time. Now, these may seem like great results if you’re a Cubs fan. Unfortunately for me, I’m not a Cubs fan. You see, I’m a Steelers fan. I expect a championship every year, and I expect results more quickly than once a millenium.

So what about in the meantime? Is there a way to severely decrease the auto DMs you see in your stream each and every day?

As they say in Minnesota….YOUBETCHA!

While experimenting with an interesting Twitter relationship management tool called TwitCleaner, I stumbled across a link to a page that purports to nearly eliminate Twitter auto DMs. Could it really be this easy? 4 easy steps to eliminate as much as 90% of the auto DM noise? Well, I tried it. I followed the 4 steps on Saturday. And……?

And not a single auto DM since. Not one. I passed it along to a number of my closest friends on Twitter. They followed the 4 easy steps. No auto DMs for them either. By now, you’re undoubtedly wondering what these 4 steps are, right? I mean, how can it be this easy?

Well, according to TwitCleaner.com, approximately 90% of auto DMs come from users of the TweetLater/SocialOomph platform. The good people over there have provided a way to opt out of DMs from their customers. So, if you’re interested in giving this a go, follow these simple 4 steps:


1. Follow @OptMeOut on Twitter


2. When @OptMeOut follows you back, that account will DM you to let you know


3. Send a DM to @OptMeOut (any text in your DM will work – yes, anything) – they’ll notify you you’ve opted out.


4. Unfollow @OptMeOut (this final step is even optional)


Can it really be this easy? Why yes…yes it can.
