Let’s Work Together In 2013!

As I reflect back on 2012, it was an awesome year; a year filled with a lot of learning and growth. I deepened friendships and relationships, built new relationships that changed my life in myriad ways and took on massive professional challenges. It’s a year I never want to forget. In fact, I want to build on the many successes I’ve had during the year.

That’s why I’m kicking off 2013 unemployed.

Big Changes in 2013

That’s right, I’m entering 2013 with no full time employment.

My contract with my former employer ended on December 31, 2012 and we will not be renewing into 2013.

Despite this fact (or maybe because of it) I’m more excited about 2013 than I have been about any year in recent memory. Not since I began law school in 1990 have I faced this much change in one year – and this coming from a guy who has relocated three times over the years for exciting job opportunities.

I’ve already made a group of people aware of my plans for 2013 via emails and phone calls – and those efforts have been rewarded with an amazing number of potential projects and assignments (the one lesson I learned in 2012 is you never know what’s possible until you ask your connections for their help). I’m writing this blog post in an effort to cast as wide a net as possible by letting you know of my plans and to see if there’s a way we might work together in 2013.

The SEO Secret Weapon Nobody Wants You to Know About

Posted by on Feb 8, 2012 in SEO & PPC | 18 comments

Your brain is the only secret weapon you need.

If you think otherwise, wake up.

My only advice beyond using your brain is to stop thinking like a spammer and start thinking like a search engine.

Changing that point of view opens up a whole host of possibilities beyond what you have been taught and beyond what you think you know. It also helps you stay ahead of the competition instead of playing catch-up.

6 Similarities Between SEOs and Tax Accountants

Posted by on Apr 18, 2011 in SEO & PPC | 13 comments

I woke to my usual routine this past Sunday morning. I got out of bed, threw on my slippers, shuffled downstairs, grabbed a cup of coffee, turned on the flat screen and turned on Sunday Morning. The show led off with an interesting piece about the history of taxes in America. An interesting piece actually.

And by the time it was over, it hit me. Being an SEO is darn near an exact parallel to being a good tax accountant:

How Google Can Solve the Spam Problem

Posted by on Feb 17, 2011 in SEO & PPC | 8 comments

Google has a spam problem. We can quibble and debate about the severity of the problem, or the nature of it, but it exists (and it always has). And its been in the news quite a bit lately. The problem has been covered by the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and the SEO industry on a weekly basis. Google even has a team dedicated to finding spam and keeping it out of search results, the search quality team.

Does Social Media = SEO of 10 Years Ago?

Posted by on Feb 9, 2011 in SEO & PPC, Social Media | 4 comments

I had a terrific time last night presenting to a small group of Social Media Marketers here in Chicago. We talked a little bit about some SEO basics. Thanks to @Leyla_a for putting together such a great shindig.

One of the points I made during the presentation is that there are a LOT of parallels between where Social Media is today and where SEO was about a decade ago – and that Social Media leaders could benefit a great deal by reaching across the aisle and talking with SEO leaders in the industry and the enterprise. In fact, many “issues” facing Social Media (things that generate a lot of hyperventilation from within the social media sphere) have already been addressed (not all of them successfully, I might add) as SEO was introduced into the enterprise. Issues such as:

Expand Your Horizons

I’ve always been fascinated by this thought provoking phrase.  There are at least three frequently used variants.

Expand your horizons
Broaden your horizons
Widen your horizons

They really all mean about the same thing, don’t they?  As I sat and pondered the meaning of these phrases, I got to wondering how far away are our horizons, anyway?  I mean how far can we really see?  I mean, I know this phrase isn’t necessarily meant to be taken literally, but I just had to know.
