The Power of Repetition

I want to share a story with you.

I was born in Pittsburgh but grew up in Chicago. After flitting about the country throughout most of my 20s and 30s, I had an opportunity to move back to Pittsburgh to take a promotion for work. Our sales force was expanding and I took over a newly created sales team that covered the PA and upstate NY region.

We were living in a beautiful suburb of Pittsburgh called Cranberry Township – gave me perfect access to freeways going north and south and the PA turnpike going east and west – so I can easily get where I need to go. Just me, my wife and our two sons Connor & Owen.

The facts of the following story are true. I remember them so clearly for reasons that will soon become abundantly clear (I hope).

Is Google Eating Itself?

Posted by on Feb 2, 2011 in Business & Leadership | 11 comments

Google is the undisputed king of search. Of that there can be no doubt. With billions and billions in revenue the Google algorithm is the undisputed jewel of the Internet. However, recently there have been a number of articles which have portrayed Google search results as less reliable and more filled with spam than ever before. Recently, Google spam king Matt Cutts blogged that despite the perceptions to the contrary, internal data shows Google results are better than ever.

Nevertheless, the perceptions of spam problems persist. Ironically, in my view, Google is directly responsible for a good bit of the spam that peppers its search results, but not in the way you might think.

Eliminate Twitter Auto DMs In 4 Easy Steps

Posted by on Jan 11, 2011 in Social Media | 8 comments

I hate Twitter auto DM messages. I realize hate may be a bit of a strong word. But I genuinely hate them. I hate them so much that I kicked off this blog nearly two months ago with a post all about how much I hate auto DMs.

You see, as I was drafting that post, I saw a blog post from Augie Ray, twitter pal extraordinaire and Social Media Analyst at Forrester. Turns out Augie conducted a survey, and most people hate Twitter auto DMs (by a 40 to 1 margin).

Augie and I agree that Twitter auto DMs suck. Individually, we’ve been crusading on behalf of all of you to stamp out the auto DM one Twitter user at a time. I’ve been following Augie’s lead. I respond to each auto DM with the following DM back:

#FollowFriday – Lisa Petrilli (@lisapetrilli)

I honestly don’t remember when I started following Lisa Petrilli on Twitter, but I can’t remember a time when she was not in my stream. When we met in person this past December at the inaugural #Cocktails4Causes event at the Drake Hotel, I teased her that I felt like a stalker because I follwed her on twitter, got the MENG newsletter which she was involved with, and then bumped into her again as the co-host of #LeadershipChat. Everywhere I wanted to be, she seemed to be there first. Ah, well.

Here’s a short list of reasons why you need to follow Lisa:

2011 Themes – Mentor | Inspire | Balance

Posted by on Jan 5, 2011 in Business & Leadership, Career & Networking | 4 comments

This being the first week of 2011, many friends and colleagues have been busy looking backward and forward – assessing their performance for 2010 and determining their focus areas for 2011.  One of the most interesting ways to look forward is to create broad themes for the oncoming year.  Online friend Margie Clayman (one of my favorite bloggers) has taken Chris Brogan’s idea of building themes around 3 words and created a hashtag.  The idea is to blog about your three words and then share them on twitter, using the hashtag #cb3words so we can all check out each other’s developmental themes for the year.

After thinking about this for the last couple days, I’ve decided that my three words for 2011 are Mentor, Inspire, and Balance.  Here’s what each means to me:
